Date: Tue, 4 Oct 2011 10:06:38 +0000
Dear All
I participate in the UNHLM and the side events as part of PAHO Delegation Team. I observed active presence of the CARICOM particularly Eastern Caribbean Countries at the UNHLM and confirmed that our Sub-Region has strong commitment to continue our efforts fighting against NCD.
We would like to share the outcomes of the UNHLM and side events, held during the period of 16-20 September 2011 in New York, for your information and further actions.
Please find the attached documents: “Political Declaration of the High-level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases” and “Summaries from the Side Events of the UN HLM on NCDs”.
The “follow up” section in the “Political Declaration” document stated that:
· Request the Secretary-General, in close collaboration with the Director-General of WHO, and in consultations with Member States, United Nations funds and programmes and other relevant international organizations, to submit by the end of 2012 to the General Assembly, at its sixty-seventh session, for consideration by Member States, options for strengthening and facilitating multisectoral action for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases through effective partnership;
· Request the Secretary-General, in collaboration with Member States, WHO, and relevant funds, programmes and specialized agencies of the United Nations system to present to the General Assembly at the sixty-eighth session (2013) a report on the progress achieved in realizing the commitments made in this Political Declaration, including on the progress of multisectoral action, and the impact on the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals, in preparation for a comprehensive review and assessment in 2014 of the progress achieved in the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.
Next biennium will be extremely important for us to move NCD agenda forward particularly through international collaboration, multisectoral as well as multidisciplinary approach both in private and public sectors.
We (PAHO) would like to continue providing our technical support and working closely with the countries.
Please feel free to contact me at anytime if you need further information and/or assistance.
With best regards,
Dr Tomo Kanda
